Plant evolution is very slow, and the mutation of a single gene only occurs in 1 / 100000 to 1 / million. How to improve the mutation rate of plants and obtain heritable excellent biological traits has been highly concerned by plant breeders.
Following the ARTP Plasma mutagenesis breeding equipment applied to microorganisms, our team cooperated with Tsinghua University to successfully develop the ARTP-P type applied to plant mutation breeding. This model not only inherits the original advantages of ARTP, but also has larger operation space and higher action intensity. It also optimizes the structure according to the different characteristics of mutagenic objects of different plants, such as pollen seeds, so that the operation is simpler, the application range is wider, and the effect is better, which can meet the breeding needs of different varieties.

Successful cases

Case1 : Breeding of high-performance strains

By using ARTP, the mutation rate of the maize genome reached 0.083%, which was much higher than that of chemical mutagenesis; mutant strains with low-stems, tillering and male sterility were found in the M₁ generation.

 Case2 : Application of mutation breeding technology in aquatic breeding

The mutation rate of flounder induced by ARTP was as high as 0.064%, which was much higher than that of ENU; the mutants showed obvious growth segregation of character.

After ARTP irradiation, the growth cycle of red crucian carp was shortened and some ornamental body color changes occured.

After ARTP irradiation, the weight of the two-month-old yellow river carp reached nearly 12 times than that of the control, and the body length increased significantly.
